One of the highlights in Raja Ampat are the Tasselled Wobbegong Sharks. We even saw some swimming. We will share videos from them later on.
Interesting fact:
Wobbegong Sharks seem to engage in active luring behavior. When it perceives food nearby, it begins to slowly wave its tail back and forth; its caudal fin resembles a small fish, complete with a dark eyespot at the base. The shark typically rests with its head elevated, which places it within striking distance of any prey drawn by its tail.

During a quiet night dive, we came across this juvenile filefish—an incredible example of nature’s adaptability. At this stage, filefish are small and often mimic floating debris to avoid detection by predators. Their bodies are covered with delicate patterns, which help them blend into their surroundings.

Night dives are a great opportunity to observe marine life that remains hidden during the day, offering a glimpse into a different side of the reef ecosystem.

The Leaf Scorpionfish (Taenianotus triacanthus) is a true master of camouflage, mimicking a drifting leaf to remain undetected by predators and prey. Found across tropical Indo-Pacific reefs, it often sways gently with the current, enhancing its disguise. Despite its delicate appearance, this ambush predator relies on stealth to catch small fish and crustaceans.

Fun fact: it regularly sheds its skin to prevent algae or parasites from accumulating, a unique adaptation among reef fish.

As we swam through the coral reef, the cool water surrounded us. Tiny glassfish moved in unison, their collective motions serving as a strategy to evade predators.
